Based on the 2021-2022 data, the undergraduate student population at NEIU is largely skewed towards women students, with 58.4% of undergraduate students being women and 41.6% being men. The total number of full-time, first-year undergraduate students is 4,608, with 2,691 women and 1,917 men.

On the other hand, the graduate student population at NEIU is greatly skewed towards women students, with 68.0% of undergraduate students being women and 32.0% being men. The total number of full-time, graduate students is 1,832, with 1,245 women and 587 men.

The largest ethnic group among the students is Hispanic, comprising 41.7% of the undergraduates population , with a total of 1,916 students.

Following closely behind are White students, constituting 22.6% of the student body, with 1,038 students. African American students represent 10.7% of the population, with 494 students, while Asian students account for 9.1%, with 418 students. Mixed race students account for 2.0% of the undergraduate student body, comprising 93 students. Finally, Hawaiian students have the smallest representation at 0.2% , with 11 students.

International students make up 1.8% of the undergraduate population, totaling 81 students.

There is also a notable percentage of students with an unknown race, making up 11.9% of the population, totaling 549 students.
